Botswana WiFi Hotspots

In 2015, the UASF subsidised Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) for the provision of wholesale WiFi hotspots in public areas across the country. The project was in line with the National Broadband Strategy (NBS) objective of achieving significant growth in national access and usage of broadband Internet. As per the requirements of the UASF, BoFiNet observes an open-access-principle in providing access to the hotspots, enabling licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to sell wireless Internet at very low retail prices. The project covers public strategic areas that include malls, hospitals, bus stations, airports, and shopping centres. A total of and 31 sites have been deployed at the following locations;

Through the WiFi hotspot project, the UASF will promote super-fast broadband connection that is secure, affordable and easy to access. It will also promote usage of local domain names, local content production and consumption, including the use of e-Government services. Using vouchers as method of purchase, consumers enjoy some innovative features of the BW Hospots that include; roaming capability, free access to government websites, and free access on public holidays.
